Enhance Eyelashes Naturally

Best product for eyelash growth and thickness

Aging can take a heavy toll on the eyelashes, making them noticeably thinner, shorter, and more brittle. Many people resort to commercial products to create an illusion of improvement, but they fail to address the underlying causes.

Current treatments include drugs originally developed to treat glaucoma.1 The hefty price tag and side effects associated with these drugs prompted scientists to search for safer alternatives.2,3

In this article, you’ll learn how scientists uncovered natural compounds that work in complementary ways to protect and strengthen the structural foundation of eyelashes—naturally making them healthier, longer, and thicker.

Getting to the Root of Eyelash Growth

Stem cells are responsible for the constant self-renewal and repair of the skin. They have the unique ability to either remain a stem cell or transform into a specialized cell type through cell division.4 Research shows that stem cells reside at the base of each hair follicle where they facilitate hair regeneration.5 These are referred to as hair follicle stem cells.

Each eyelash follicle rotates through the same three stages of growth as other body hair follicles. The first stage (anagen) is the growth phase that lasts roughly one to two months.6 It is characterized by stem cells giving rise to specialized cells called keratinocytes with two main functions: 1) producing the hair shaft visible above the skin, and 2) synthesizing the tough and fibrous protein keratin that adds fullness, length, and strength to the hair shaft.7-9

As the eyelash follicle enters the second or transitional stage (catagen), which lasts approximately two weeks, it begins to shrink and hair growth ceases. In the third and final stage (telogen), the eyelash follicle becomes active once again, producing new hair that emerges from the skin’s surface by pushing out old hair to shed naturally. Telogen is the longest phase for eyelashes, lasting around four to nine months.6

As a person ages, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation compromises the regenerative capacity of hair follicle stem cells.10 Keratin production also diminishes in hair follicles.11 Together, these age-associated changes lead to the outward appearance of weak, thin, and short eyelashes.

Fortunately, scientists have uncovered compounds that effectively target these changes to improve the appearance of eyelashes.

Novel Plant Extract Safeguards against Ultraviolet Radiation

Ultraviolet radiation induces oxidative stress in hair follicle stem cells that reduces their vitality and activity, in turn diminishing the health and longevity of the eyelashes.12,13 Scientists began investigating safe and effective compounds that protect hair follicle stem cells against the consequences of sun exposure. Plant stem cells derived from a rare grape variety quickly stood out.

Gamay Teinturier Fréaux grapes grow in an east-central region of France. They have red flesh and juice that signifies a high content of anthocyanins, flavonoids that combat oxidative stress through potent free radical scavenging activity.14,15 The unique synergy between anthocyanins and other metabolites present in the grape provides frontline defense against ultraviolet damage.16

The capacity of stem cells to form colonies, known as colony-forming efficiency, is a key measure of their vitality and activity. Ultraviolet radiation has been shown to decrease colony-forming efficiency. Researchers conducted a laboratory experiment in which skin stem cells were treated with or without grape stem cell extract before exposure to ultraviolet radiation. While untreated cells experienced a 58% decrease in colony-forming efficiency, no changes were seen in treated cells. This demonstrated that treated cells were safeguarded against harmful ultraviolet radiation.16

Let’s now take a look at how a recently developed peptide significantly enhances eyelash growth.

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 Stimulates Eyelash Growth
The formation of keratin in the anagen phase is essential for eyelash growth and density. With advancing age, this process fails to run smoothly.11 To combat age-related decline in keratin synthesis, scientists developed a peptide called myristoyl pentapeptide-17. It has been shown in laboratory experiments to increase the expression of keratin genes by up to 160%, thereby boosting keratin production.17 This has translated into striking results in human clinical studies.

In a recent trial, 15 human volunteers ranging in age from 24 to 82 applied an eyeliner serum containing myristoyl pentapeptide-17 to the roots of their lashes. The researchers used computer-assisted image analysis software to assess eyelash characteristics. They observed a 25% increase in eyelash length and thickness in just 14 days!17

Even more impressive, another study revealed that participants applying an eyeliner serum with myristoyl pentapeptide-17 to the target area increased eyelash thickness and length by 72% after six weeks. Both studies reported no adverse side effects.17

Glycoproteins Support Hair Follicle Formation
Glycoproteins are large molecules composed of carbohydrate and protein. They form a vital part of the extracellular matrix that provides a proper environment for the development of new hair follicles. In fact, research indicates that glycoproteins act as powerful chemical messengers between the layers of the skin to jumpstart eyelash growth.18,19

Panthenol Exerts Powerful Moisturizing Effects
Panthenol has been a mainstay ingredient in hair products for the past two decades and for good reason. It is a derivative of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), a vital component of coenzyme A that assists in metabolic functions such as protein and lipid synthesis. Panthenol is converted into pantothenic acid in the hair shaft where it effectively binds water molecules, thereby improving eyelash moisture.20

Summary

Current treatments to improve aging eyelashes come with a steep price and substantial side effects, making them an unattractive option for many people. Fortunately, scientists have identified a network of complementary compounds, including a novel plant extract, myristoyl pentapeptide-17, glycoproteins, and panthenol, which protect and strengthen hair follicles to naturally deliver healthier, longer, and thicker eyelashes.

5 Methods For Stopping Hair Loss (and Possibly Even Growing Some Back)

Man in front of barbershop

If you’re balding, it’s a lot harder to grow all your hair back than it is to stop your follicles from disappearing in the first place. Slow the erosion of your hairline with these five dermatologist-approved strategies.

1. Meditation and Exercise

In balding men, periods of rapid shedding are often brought on by stress. The reason? Stress floods your body with the hormone cortisol, and then other hormone levels fluctuate in response, says Melissa Piliang, M.D., a hair-loss expert at Cleveland Clinic.

If you’re predisposed to balding, this can speed the process. To better control your stress, you might want to try traditional meditation or, if that’s not your thing, an active meditation regimen such as yoga or tai chi.

Or just commit to getting in better shape.

A 2015 study in PLOS One found that older men with a high level of cardio respiratory fitness release 42 percent less cortisol throughout the day than unfit men do. The stress hormone has been linked to all sorts of diseases.

2. Minoxidil

Minoxidil (Rogaine) probably won’t restore what’s lost, but it can help you hold on to what’s left and even help you regrow a bit. The topical med increases bloodflow as well as oxygen and nutrient delivery to the follicle.

Liquid Rogaine can cause irritation and leave a greasy coating on your hair, so opt for the 5 percent foam, says Dr. Piliang.

Rogaine costs only $29.99 a month (rogaine.com), but you’ll have to use it forever to retain any gains. [Note that solubilizers required to dissolve minoxidil are known irritants.]

Rub it into your scalp in the morning and again at night for the most benefit. Bonus: Unlike the oral medication finasteride (the other FDA-approved drug, sold as Propecia), minoxidil isn’t linked with erectile dysfunction or decreased libido.

3. Laser Devices

Besides minoxidil and finasteride, laser devices are the only other hair-loss treatment cleared by the FDA in recent years. The devices are sold as wands or Star Wars-worthy helmets for $200 to nearly $900.

In the largest study, published in 2014 in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, men who zapped their scalp three times a week saw a significant increase in hair density after 26 weeks.

One theory is that lasers have an antioxidant effect on hair follicles. But before you rush out to buy a six-pack of combs, understand that “hair growth” doesn’t necessarily mean “hair other people can see.”

You will likely feel it, though, which may have a placebo effect on your confidence.

4. Ketoconazole Shampoo

Swap your standard shampoo for a brand with 1 percent ketoconazole, such as Nizoral ($13 for 7 ounces, drugstore.com). Or ask your doctor to prescribe the 2 percent version.

“It’s marketed as an antidandruff ingredient, but there’s solid research ketoconazole is an anti-androgen,” says Dr. Piliang.

Anti-androgens block the conversion of testosterone to D•HT, the signaling molecule that shrinks hair follicles.

That’s how finasteride works too, but because ketoconazole is confined to the scalp, it doesn’t have the risk of negative sexual side effects, she says.

Massage the shampoo into your scalp, step out of the shower stream, wait 2 to 3 minutes, and rinse.

5. Vitamin D

A British Journal of Dermatology study reported that people with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss, were three times as likely to be D deficient as those with healthy hair. “Vitamin D helps hair reset its growth phase,” explains Dr. Piliang.

To jumpstart your follicles, she recommends taking 2,000 IU a day of vitamin D3, especially in winter when you’re exposed to less sunlight.

But don’t try baking your bald spot in the sun to ramp up your vitamin D production. That might result in an even bigger problem.

“Men should be careful about sun exposure on a balding scalp, since it’s a common location for skin cancers,” Dr. Piliang warns.

WHICH serum to use?! I'm confused... they all look good.

What the best serum to use?

All of our serums perform different functions,
and all of them can work together.
A few of them pair together more intuitively.

Here's a breakdown.

FOR HAIR & SCALP

All of our hair stimulating products work wonderfully together.

• Our "hero product" RevivHair Max Stimulating Serum is applied daily, and is a leave-in serum. If you're looking for hair stimulation and grey hair reversal, try our new RevivHair REV.

• RevivScalp Rejuvenating Scalp Serum Masque is a pre-shampoo serum for cranky scalp issues and hair thinning, and is left on the scalp for 10-30 minutes before shampooing.

• Our RevivHair Stimulating Shampoo & Conditioner and remarkable new RevivHair Placode Booster Serum (used 3-4 times a year) round out this product line perfectly.

• RevivLash Lash & Brow Stimulating Serum targets eyelash & eyebrow density & fullness.

We recommend using all these products together to address hair loss and thinning hair issues. For the budget-conscious, landmark RevivHair Max  Stimulating Serum would be the first choice.

FOR THE FACE

Our latest invention, TelomErase 6-in-1 Multi-Corrective Serum is the current benchmark. We recommend this stellar treatment serum to all our customers.

TelomErase Serum has the same base as our very-popular Ultimate Serum, but also has instant skin tightening, more wrinkle blurring, and the latest in long-term anti-aging telomere support. It is also even more moisturizing than the Ultimate Serum. Many customers have "graduated" to this new serum.

Not to discount renowned Ultimate Serum: it has a number of novel ingredients not found in TelomErase, like alpha-arbutin for brightening and extra stem cells, growth factors & peptides for long-term anti-aging. It's also a favorite of customers who have previously used TNS® Essential Serum from SkinMedica®. If you use these two serums together, we recommend TelomErase in the morning, and Ultimate Serum at night.

Revivinol "Unretinol" Serum is another one of our unique serums we recommend to everyone, and all skin types. A daily skin renewal regimen with a retinol is essential, and Revivinol is unique in that it has all the benefits of a retinol/retinoid WITHOUT the side effects. Read more.

Phloretin Ferulic Serum DIY Kit is unique, and a rather standalone product that we always recommend. Both TelomErase Serum and Ultimate Serum contain a Vitamin C Ester, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, but it is in small concentration compared to our Phloretin Serum. We lose a teaspoon of collagen from our faces every year after age 30, and vitamin C is required to build that collagen. The "gold standard" is ascorbic acid, included with the Phloretin Serum. Because of its low pH, it cannot be included in most other products because it would negatively affect actives like growth factors, peptides, and other delicate proteins, and it would degrade quickly if we were to buffer the pH. Its low pH is also why it works so well, since it has an exfoliating effect in addition to collagen building.

Here's a blog post about the subject: All about Vitamin C Serums, and why ours is best

We recommend waiting at least thirty minutes after applying the Phloretin Ferulic Serum before applying our TelomErase Serum, Ultimate Serum or any product that contains delicate growth factors since the lower pH of the Phloretin Serum (even at 5% strength, and especially at 20% strength) may lessen the effectiveness of the growth factors. We recommend the following regimen: applying the Phloretin Serum in the morning, and the growth factor serum(s) at night.

Since hydration is different than moisturization, and most skin is dehydrated, we also always recommend our remarkable HA7X Multi-Molecular Hydrator Serum for hydration & plumping, as well as its anti-pollution & anti-stress effects (one of the great benefits of the award-winning Neurophroline® ingredient).

Our Copper Peptide Healing Serum contains a great copper peptide that is a wonderful active for skin. Because it generally cannot be combined in high concentration with vitamin C, it is a standalone product. It is not necessary to apply the copper peptide in the Healing Serum every day to achieve results (targeting inflammation, healing, and overall rejuvenation). You might reserve daily use of Copper Peptide Serum more to address specific, acute issues that may arise, like irritation, sunburn, rash, windburn, post-procedure, etc.

OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY

All of our facial serums can be used on the neck, hands and chest. TelomErase Serum can be applied to the upper eyelid area, but be careful not to get it in your eyes.

Our RevivSculpt Transforming Body Serum is, of course, meant for the body, but can also be used on the face although it is a bit occlusive.

For stellar lip renewal, try our RevivLip Lip Serum System.

All our facial serums can also be applied to the lips with the exception of Phloretin Serum.

Mix Serum with your Foundation for Better Results!

Mix your foundation with a stellar serum like TelomErase 6-in-1 Multi-Corrective Serum

Tips from beauty site LillyRose @julietly: how to mix serums with your foundation for better results:

Foundations do so much more for our skin than just even out and conceal. Many foundations nowadays have healing properties to help improve skin. Rather than go out and buy a whole new bottle of foundation, you can make your own miracle by following the 5 ways to mix foundation.

1. Oil- For people with dry skin, mixing a foundation with one to two drops of jojoba oil will make the foundation apply smoothly over any dry spots. For people with acne-prone skin, a drop or two of tea tree oil will make your foundation into an acne-fighting foundation.

2. Moisturizer- This is the perfect way to create your own BB cream at home. Mix a drop of foundation with moisturizer/ face cream for a BB cream that matches your skin perfectly!

3. Serum- One of my favorite ingredients to mix with foundation. My skin has been loving the TelomErase Serum. I put one drop of this serum on the back of my hand and add two drops of foundation. I mix the two together and I end up with a foundation that covers and works to erase dark spots, brightens, and moisturizes. RevivSerums TelomErase Serum has really helped my foundation step it up. Sometimes my foundation emphasizes dry spots around my eyes and nose area. Now, my face feels soft and hydrated because this serum has the same texture and moisturizes like an oil. Whether I have my makeup on or my makeup off, my skin just looks brighter and more radiant. I love how soft and smooth my face looks after mixing this serum in to my foundation! (Tip: When mixing serums with your foundation make sure you apply the mixed foundation quickly to your skin because serums are meant to absorbed quickly or it will become dry and hard to apply.)

4. Other foundations- I know we have all done this before. We have stood at the makeup display, debating between two bottles of foundation, unsure which one really matches our skin tone. After standing there for a full hour, I go home and find out that I still bought the wrong color. To fix this mistake, I mix my foundation with another bottle of foundation. I add a drop of foundation of the back of my hand and mix it with another drop or two of the other foundation to create a foundation that actually matches my skin.

5. Concealer- Sometimes foundation doesn’t cover as much as we like, rather than buying a whole new bottle of foundation, I mix my foundation with a bit of concealer. I take my concealer and apply a small amount to the back of my hand, then I apply two drop of foundation and mix well. So my face doesn’t look cakey, I apply this mixture with a beautyblender.
